The way to a voter’s ballot is through their stomach.
At least that’s what the hope has been since 1992, when Family Circle magazine began collecting cookie recipes from the wives of presidential candidates for their Presidential Cookie Poll.
This year’s recipes — featuring the first submission from a husband, former President Bill Clinton — were released this week.
Clinton submitted the same recipe that his wife, current Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, submitted during the 1992 and 1996 campaigns. This year, the recipe was dubbed, “Clinton Family’s Chocolate Chip Cookies.” Hillary Clinton’s trustworthiness could take a hit for trying to pass off what is clearly an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie as a regular chocolate chip cookie. Also for the fact that President Clinton is now a vegan while his submitted recipe is not.
Melania Trump, wife of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, submitted “Star Cookies,” no surprise given the Trump campaign’s affinity for star shapes.
Clearly, there was only one thing to do with these recipes: make them and take them to the people.
I had some thoughts during the baking process. I even burned a batch, so now my kitchen will forever be haunted by the smell of this election cycle.
We gave visitors outside the White House a blind taste test and asked them to vote for their favorite. To give them a third-party candidate, we also made a vegan version of Clinton’s cookie, made with cornstarch instead of eggs.
See which cookie won the hearts and stomachs of the voters in the video above.
