Former Rep. Steve LaTourette died Wednesday of pancreatic cancer at the age of 62.
The former Ohio lawmaker, who retired in 2012, was a part of the Republican wave in 1994 that swept the GOP into congressional power for the first time in decades.
“I am proud to have known and worked with Steve LaTourette. He cared deeply about our state and our nation, and his family can take great pride in the legacy he has left us,” tweeted Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who served with him in Congress.
LaTourette represented Northeast Ohio and he was viewed by many as one of the dwindling number of moderates in the House of Representatives.
“Another one of the good guys is gone too soon. We need more people like Steve LaTourette in public service,” the Ohio Republican Party said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to his family.”
Condolences quickly rolled in Wednesday evening from several of LaTourette’s former colleagues and native Ohioans.
Rep. Marcia Fudge, a Democrat, wrote, “My heart is heavy hearing of the passing of my colleague, frmr Rep. Steve LaTourette. My prayers are with his family & the Ohio community.”
“Saddened to hear of Steve Latourette’s passing. Steve had a dry sense of humor, he loved his family and his life. He will be missed,” read a tweet from Rep. Bob Gibbs.
“My friend Steve LaTourette had tremendous courage. He battled cancer and U.S. deficits,” Rep. Jim Cooper said on Twitter.
