CURWENSVILLE – The Rotary Club of Curwensville welcomed guests Joe White, president, Rotary Club of Clearfield, and speaker Tangi Borden, to its regular meeting July 26 at the Central Hotel in Curwensville.
White and Borden presented information to the Club on the specifics of the “Rotary 4-Way Test” Speech Contest held annually.
Borden teaches 11th grade English and honors classes at Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School. She has coordinated the participation of her students in the speech contest for the past four years.
One of the most widely printed and quoted statements of ethics in the world is the “4-Way Test,” which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, the “4-Way Test” asks the following four questions of the things we think, say and do:
- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Borden noted that the outcome for students participating in the speech contest has been very beneficial to her students in the past and has resulted in several students advancing to the district competition.
The topics are to be timely, interesting and important and must be specifically subjected to The Rotary “4-Way Test.” Additional information on the “4-Way Test” Speech Contest can be found at www.district7360.org, including downloadable manual and forms.
