Author, comedian and political commentator D.L. Hughley on Wednesday slammed former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s recent comments regarding the black community, saying he is in no position to tell African-Americans how to behave.
“When old white men tell black men how to act, that’s the most ridiculous thing in the world,” Hughley said in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo on “New Day.” “To tell black people to speak a certain way and act a certain way is no different than telling a woman how to dress so she doesn’t get raped.”
Giuliani has called the Black Lives Matter movement “inherently racist,” and doled out parenting advice in an interview with CBS on Sunday.
“If I were a black father and I was concerned with the safety of my child, really concerned about it and not in a politically activist sense, I would say, ‘Be very respectful of the police,'” Giuliani said.
“Taking parenting advice from Rudy Giuliani is like Kim Kardashian giving me marriage advice. It is ridiculous,” Hughley said.
“He was a brutal bear who basically had a reign of terror over black people in this country and this city,” he added in an interview in New York.
Hughley also appeared on CNN in the immediate aftermath of the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of police officers. Since then, five Dallas police officers were killed by gunman Micah Johnson, who targeted officers patrolling a non-violent Black Lives Matter march.
“I value human life, whether it was a blue uniform or has black skin,” said Hughley, emphasizing that people can mourn the deaths of police officers and still recognize “that black people have always been brutalized by police.”
