Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski dismissed Sunday the controversy over an image Trump tweeted Saturday as “political correctness run amok.”
Lewandowski, who was fired by Trump last month, told CNN’s Brianna Keilar on “State of the Union” that: “A tweet is a simple tweet.”
“And the bottom line is you can read into things that are not there. You know, this is a simple star,” Lewandowski said.
Trump tweeted a photo featuring Hillary Clinton, a pile of cash and a six-pointed star that evoked the Star of David emblazoned with the words “Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!” Once that triggered a controversy online, Trump deleted the tweet and replaced it with a similar one two hours later with the star replaced by a circle.
Lewandowski said it’s “the same star that sheriff’s departments all over the place” use for their badges.
“To read into something that isn’t there is — you know what, again, I think that’s the mainstream media trying to attack Donald Trump for something that isn’t there,” he said.
