Republican Colorado Senate candidate Darryl Glenn said Friday he welcomed Donald Trump’s visit to the state — but the two won’t be appearing together and Glenn hasn’t formally endorsed the presumptive Republican nominee.
“I have not spoken to Mr Trump,” Glenn told CNN’s Jim Sciutto on “New Day.”
Glenn said he had not invited Trump to Colorado, nor had he asked the real estate mogul to stump on his behalf.
“We are running the people’s campaign,” he said. “I believe it doesn’t matter if you are a Republican, Democrat or unaffiliated, you’re going to get you on board.”
Glenn, who was endorsed by Sen. Ted Cruz and clinched the GOP’s nomination for Colorado’s Senate race Tuesday, said it was important for Trump to connect with voters in the swing state and understand their frustrations with Washington gridlock.
“He does not hurt us. … We will rally and, at the end of the day, make sure we deliver Colorado for the Republicans,” he said. “He needs to come and it’s important for him to come and lay out his vision. But it’s also important for us to realize that this is a purple state and what’s been lacking is a focus on the people.”
Glenn, a Colorado county commissioner who upset GOP establishment favorite Jon Keyser in the Republican primary on Tuesday, now faces a hotly contested general election race with incumbent Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet.
