CLEARFIELD – An Indiana man pleaded guilty to a felony theft charge for taking more than $3,300 worth of jewelry during Tuesday’s plea and sentencing court.
Nicholas John Travis, 31, currently an inmate of the Centre County Jail, was sentenced by Judge Paul E. Cherry to 90 days to one year in jail to be followed by two years probation.
This new sentence will run consecutive to his current Centre County sentences for probation violations. He was fined $200 plus costs and he must pay $3,350 in restitution to the victim.
The charges stem from an incident in Westover between June of 2015 and July 31, 2015.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, in December the victim told police that Travis and a female moved into her residence a year prior. Sometime in September, she was made aware that Travis had taken several jewelry items from her and sold them for drug money.
The victim said Travis told her he sold the jewelry in Barnesboro and promised to pay her back. In October, he paid her $50. That was the only money she received from him. He was no longer living with her and she believed he was now in Indiana.
The victim told police she was missing an engagement ring, a wrap that was missing a diamond, her mother’s anniversary ring, her mother’s wedding ring and her husband’s wedding band. The value of these items was $4,600.
When police interviewed Travis in February he admitted he took a ring from the victim’s home and sold it for $80. He stated he was high on Klonopin when he did it.
About a week later, he tried to get it back, but the guy had already sold it, he said. He agreed that he had made arrangements with the victim to pay her $1,000 to $2,000 and that he had paid $200.
He admitted he may have taken more than one ring, but he was not sure because he was high at the time.
