Donald Trump lambasted Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Thursday over two rulings in which the high court refused to strike down President Barack Obama’s signature health care law.
“I mean, who would’ve thought that could’ve happened? He could’ve killed it twice and he didn’t,” Trump told conservative talk show host Mike Gallagher. “That was terrible. And that was a Bush appointment. I mean that was — that was so bad, that was so bad, what happened.”
Trump also pledged that his Supreme Court appointments would always rule against abortion rights.
“You wouldn’t even have to bother going to court,” he said.
Pointing to the court’s recent decision to strike down a Texas law that restricts access to abortion providers, Trump said had Justice Antonin Scalia not died — leaving the court down one justice for its term — the decision would have been in favor of the Texas law.
However, that claim is inaccurate: The decision was 5-3 against the Texas law — which means the court would have ruled against it even with Scalia among the dissenters.
Still, Trump said that if “Scalia was living or Scalia was replaced by me, you wouldn’t have had that.”
Trump also slammed Bill Clinton’s airport meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch, calling it “horrible” and evidence of a “rigged system.”
“I just think it’s so terrible — I think it’s so horrible,” Trump said. “I think it’s the biggest story — one of the big stories of this week of this month, of this year.”
The presumptive Republican nominee continued: “You know, I’ve been talking about the rigged system, how it’s rigged. This is terrible.”
Lynch and Bill Clinton met privately in Phoenix Monday after the two realized they were on the same tarmac, an aide to the former president said. The encounter took place ahead of the public release Tuesday morning of the House Benghazi Committee’s report on the 2012 attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya, and as the Justice Department’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state continues.
Trump called it “a massive story” that “even the liberal media” is covering.
“You see a thing like this and, even in terms of judgment, how bad a judgment is it for him or for her to do this?” Trump said. “Who would do this?”
