A sheriff’s deputy in Louisiana’s Jefferson Parish was shot dead Wednesday afternoon during a confrontation with a man he had approached on a street, authorities said.
Deputy David F. Michel Jr. was working for a street-crime unit when he was shot, sheriff’s spokesman John Fortunato said.
Michel stopped a man on the street in a high-crime area about 12:20 p.m. and the two got into a scuffle, Fortunato said.
A witness said the suspect pulled a handgun from his waistband and shot at the deputy multiple times including when he was on the ground, Fortunato said.
Michel was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans, where he later died.
One suspect has been arrested and was being treated for minor injuries at a hospital, Fortunato said.
Jefferson Parish is near New Orleans.
