CLEARFIELD — Jake Sorbera singled and scored from second base on a Clarence error with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team a 2-1 victory at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field Sunday evening.
The walk-off win in the Central Penn League make-up game leveled the Chiefs’ record at 3-3 for their trip to State College Tuesday.
Brandon Orsich was the beneficiary after allowing five hits, all in the second and third innings.
Singles by Andy Swabick, Hunter Eminhizer and Nick Laird put the Mounties in front in the second.
After surrendering a pair of two-out hits in the third, Orsich retired 16 of the next 18 batters.
Ten of his 11 strikeouts came in the last four innings.
He walked one and hit one batter in a 98-pitch effort that turned into his second win in three decisions when Sorbera led off the extra frame with a liner to right field, moved up on a wild pitch and was waved around third base by manager Sid Lansberry because of a throwing error on Justin Fedder’s slow roller through the middle.
Anything less wouldn’t have been good enough for Orsich to best Clarence right-hander O.J. Onder, who had stranded 12 Chiefs, seven in scoring position.
They had at least one hit in every inning, but Onder kept them frustrated by continually wiggling off the hook.
Clearfield’s run was a result of Fedder’s double to left and Josh Sorbera’s sharp single through the left side in the third inning.
Those two and Reese Wilson each had two of the 11 hits off Onder, who struck out three and walked three.
A change in the Chiefs’ schedule moves Wednesday’s CPL game at Clarence to Friday in the Bellefonte Bandits Wood Bat Tournament. They will play a second game that afternoon at Governors Park and another on Saturday.
