A large wildfire has broken out in the city of Yarnell, Airzona, where 19 elite firefighters were killed in 2013.
The latest blaze, which is being dubbed the “Tenderfoot Fire,” has forced hundreds of evacuations, according to CNN affiliate KPHO.
As of 8:30 p.m. local time Wednesday, the fire had “laid down somewhat,” the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said. No injuries have been reported so far. At that time, it had burned between 600 and 700 acres, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.
But the Arizona State Forestry Department put the figure at about 400 acres at around 11 p.m. local time Wednesday.
It said some 85 personnel are battling the blaze, using both air and ground resources.
The fire is raging in the same city where the Granite Mountain Hotshots died on June 30, 2013. That fire was started by a lightning strike, rapidly spread from one-half acre to several hundred and destroyed more than 100 structures.
It took the lives of 19 of the firefighters before it was contained.
