CURWENSVILLE – Rylee Young made the most of Senior Day for the Curwensville Area High School girls softball team.
Young, one of six seniors honored before the battle with Elk County Catholic on Thursday afternoon, threw a three hit, complete game shutout that included nine strikeouts in the 4-0 victory.
Curwensville defeated the Lady Crusaders in St. Marys earlier this season, 10-6.
The Lady Tide picked up its first run in the bottom of the second inning as Emily Miller picked up a one out single to left field with Keisha Maines coming on as a pinch runner.
Teghan Jacobson followed with a single up the middle giving Curwensville runners at first and third with still one out.
Curwensville picked up the run when Maines came home on a fielder’s choice RBI by Camryn Richards.
Another two runs crossed the plate for the Lady Tide in the bottom of the third as Madison Bumbarger reached on an error and scored on a towering two out triple to dead center by Hannah Dixon, who then scored on a single by Haley McGarry making it 3-0 in favor of Curwensville.
The final run of the day came after Lady Tide first baseman Kayli Sedgwick reached base on a fielder’s choice.
With one out Ariel Zattoni was inserted as a pinch runner for Sedgwick and moved to third on a walk to Bumbarger and a single by Kaylee Harnett.
An ECC two out error by their shortstop led to the final run being scored by Zattoni.
Only one runner reached as far as third base for the Lady Bobcats, which happened in the top of the fourth frame.
Allen Leigey, Curwensville head coach, was thankful to finally see some clutch hitting, saying, “We did get some clutch hits today for the first time in awhile. Hannah’s (Dixon) triple and Haley’s (McGarry) single that brought Hannah home were huge today.”
About Young, Leigey commented, “The best way to describe Rylee (Young) is Rylee is just Rylee, she does her thing and today she was on top of her game from the circle.”
The Lady Tide, 11-9, now prepare for the District 9 Class “A” Playoffs that begin Monday. Curwensville, the six seed will travel to Clarion to play the three seeded Lady Bobcats starting at 4:30 pm.
Curwensville defeated Clarion in the season’s first game, on March 24, at home 3-1.
About the upcoming playoff opener, Leigey said, “Now we start to gear up for the playoffs that begin on Monday against Clarion. We feel if we play the way we know we can, then we will make some noise in the postseason. We just need to get our bats working some more and keep on producing.”
Besides Young, the five others recognized on Senior Day were Haley McGarry, Emily Miller, Teghan Jacobson, Kayli Sedgwick and Madison Bumbarger.
