HYDE — Juniors Jake Sorbera and Will Myers combined on a four-hitter as the Clearfield Area High School baseball team celebrated Senior Night with a 9-0 victory over Curwensville at the Bison Sports Complex Thursday.
The Bison collected 11 hits with Zane Morgan singling twice and driving in three runs, Brandon Orsich whacking a two-run double and a single and Myers chipping in with a pair of singles.
Orsich was one of the seniors recognized in a brief ceremony prior to the non-league game.
“It was good to have the seniors have a good win, and all four contributed,” Bison coach Sid Lansberry said.
Justin Fedder singled, stole two bases and scored two runs, Jon Trimpey had an RBI single and scored once and Logan Lykens added an RBI groundout.
Sorbera went five innings for his fourth win in seven decisions, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out two.
“I thought Jake’s performance was really encouraging,” Lansberry said. “He had a really good breaking ball and pitched really well. We only took him out because we wanted Will to have a little bit of work going into the playoffs, cause he had not pitched since Friday.”
Myers worked two innings and preserved Clearfield’s fourth shutout of the season via two infield pop-ups with the bases loaded in the seventh. He fanned two and gave up one hit and three walks.
The Bison, who will take an 11-8 record into their District 9 Class AAA semifinal home game against Bradford Tuesday, got off to a fast start.
They tagged Golden Tide southpaw Austin Lansberry for four hits in the first inning with Morgan and Myers socking run-scoring singles and then chased him while breaking it open in the third frame.
After Morgan singled home Fedder, who had walked and pilfered second, Trimpey reached base on an error and Myers walked to fill the sacks.
Then, Orsich greeted reliever R.J. Olson with his opposite-field double to deep right, Ty Bender ripped a single through the left side for an RBI and Lykens notched his RBI to make it 7-0.
Reese Wilson singled and Thayne Morgan was hit by a pitch to set the table again in the sixth. They crossed the plate on Zane Morgan’s groundout and Trimpey’s single, respectively.
“Pretty much up and down the order, we had good offense,” Lansberry said.
The Bison. 13-0 winners over the Golden Tide on May 3, also had seven stolen bases, with the Morgan twins matching Fedder’s pair.
“The Morgan boys make things happen when they get on base, and Fedder has 15 stolen bases,” Lansberry said.
Noah Strickland had two hits for Curwensville, which finished 7-13.
“It’s definitely not the way we wanted to end the season,” Golden Tide coach Tom Harzinski said. “The big thing was we left nine on.
“Clearfield played a good game. Sorbera threw strikes and did what he had to do, and Myers came in and did what he needed to do.
“I wish them the best of luck in the playoffs.”
That will be the goal for the Golden Tide next season after improving from three wins last year.
“Hopefully, we make the next step up,” Harzinski said. “Our main speech was we can’t accept losing next year.”
Strickland is one of five seniors who won’t be around to help out.
“Great leader,” Harzinski said of his center fielder/pitcher. “Jake Terry, really good player. Olson does whatever we told him to do. Hunter Lancaster, always tough behind the plate. And Garrett Shaw led us in hitting.
“They are going to be really missed.”
Coach Donnie Shimmel’s Clearfield junior varsity closed out one of the best seasons in years with a 9-1 win for a 14-3 record.
Wyatt Porter went the distance for the victory while Evan Brown had two hits and three RBIs, Alec Graham also had a pair of hits and Ethan McGinnis, Jarrit Wagner and Jon Gates scored two runs apiece.
