New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie currently has his lowest approval rating in his time as governor, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
Only 29% of voters approve of Christie’s performance, a rating that is the worst in six years for any of the governors in nine states surveyed by the university. More than 60% of New Jersey voters disapprove of the performance of their governor, who has been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump.
“It’s a drastic decline in popularity for a governor who once looked like a strong choice for president,” said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.
And 72% of New Jersey voters say Trump should not pick Christie as his runningmate. Even the majority of Republican voters — 64% — think Trump should look elsewhere for a vice presidential candidate.
“Christie-for-President was a flop and, as far as the local folks are concerned, so is Christie-for-Vice President. Forget local pride, New Jersey voters say overwhelmingly they don’t want their Gov on a Trump ticket,” Carroll said.
Christie’s previous lowest approval rating was more than a year ago in April 2015 when 56% of voters disapproved of the former presidential candidate.
Republicans are the only group listed in the survey that gave Christie a positive approval score. Only 9% of Democrats approve of Christie and only 26% of independent voters approve of the governor.
Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,989 New Jersey voters from May 10 to May 16. The survey had a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percentage points.
