HOUTZDALE – In perhaps what was the best pitching duel in girls softball in the area this season, Sidney Lewis of Moshannon Valley and Curwensville’s Rylee Young put on quite a display Monday afternoon in Houtzdale.
In the end Lewis out dueled Young, 1-0, as the Damsels scored with two outs in the bottom half of the eighth inning to pick up win number nine on the year against eight losses.
Lewis went eight innings, giving up just five hits, no runs, no walks while striking out four Lady Tide.
Young pitched seven and two-thirds innings before giving up a lone run in the bottom half of the eighth inning. In the tough loss the Lady Tide senior gave up only four hits, walked no one and struck out five.
Mo Valley won the game on a double by Abby Butler in the last half of the eighth frame and pinch runner Emma Kitko scored the game’s only tally with two outs on a single by Elmira-Hope Ecklund.
Curwensville had a great chance in the top of the seventh, only to be thwarted by an outstanding defensive play by Damsel second baseman Mickey Lansberry.
Young led off with a single for the Lady Tide which was followed by a double by Kaylee Harnett giving Curwensville runners at second and third with no outs.
Emily Miller popped up to the first baseman for the first out and then Kayli Sedgwick went down swinging for the second out.
It was now up to Tide second baseman Teghan Jacobson.
Jacobson did all she could to give Curwensville the lead as she smacked a line drive between first and second base, but a leaping, diving catch by Mo Valley’s Lansberry stopped the inning for Curwensville with much disappointment.
Ecklund had three singles for the Damsels.
Curwensville’s offense has been struggling the last part of the season, scoring a total of only two runs in five of its last six games.
The last time Curwensville had an offensive explosion, at least in the last six games, was when they scored 15 times against Kane last Tuesday.
The Lady Tide, now 9-9, have another road trip on Tuesday, traveling to Brockway, to play the Lady Rovers in a game that starts at 4:15 pm. On April 21, in Curwensville, Brockway prevailed 5-1.
