CURWENSVILLE — For the second time in six days, the Curwensville Area High School softball team was unable to solve DuBois Central Catholic ace Riley Assalone and suffered a 4-0 loss at Riverside Field Thursday afternoon.
Assalone three-hit the Lady Tide for the undefeated North Allegany Small School South Division champions’ 18th win.
The Lady Cardinal junior shut out the Lady Tide 10-0 on four hits last Saturday.
She chalked up seven strikeouts with no walks in the rematch.
Curwensville’s Rylee Young had a similar line with eight strikeouts and no walks in what should have been a scoreless duel going to the sixth inning.
The Lady Cardinals picked up an unearned run in the first inning with Assalone winding up at third base due to a Lady Tide throwing error on her bloop single and then scoring on a single by Macey Hanes.
A tough break on Emily Miller’s single to deep center prevented the Lady Tide from getting even in the bottom of the inning.
Kayley Harnett, aboard via an error, was off and running on Miller’s two-out drive that hit the top of the fence, but it bounced right back to Hanes. When the Lady Cardinal center fielder overthrew the relay person, Curwensville coach Allen Leigey waved Harnett around third base.
However, the ball bounced right to Assalone, who fired a strike to catcher Jordy Frank for the out.
“I took a chance to make them make the play, and they did,” Leigey said.
DuBois Central Catholic provided Assalone with two insurance markers in the sixth on Libby Maurer’s sacrifice fly and Steph Rossi’s RBI single.
Hanes singled home another run in the seventh inning.
Hanes, Frank and Rossi each had two hits for DCC.
Miller had a pair of singles for Curwensville (9-8).
The Lady Tide will go to Amesville Monday for their Moshannon Valley League finale against Moshannon Valley at 4:30 p.m.
