HYDE — The Clearfield Area High School Track and Field teams matched third place finishes when they played host to the 2016 Mountain League Championship Meet on Wednesday afternoon at the Bison Sports Complex.
The boys were edged by Central by a point and a half, 99.5 to 98, for second place. The Tyrone Golden Eagles won the title with 135 team points.
The Clearfield girls team scored 83 points, but were far behind leaders Bellefonte (159) and Penns Valley (133).
Bison Head Coach John Jacob filed this post-meet report, “Last night at the Mountain League Championship Invitational both the Clearfield Girls and Boys placed third. We had a lot of good performances last night, highlighted by Matt Collins’ record setting performance in the discus. Matt broke the school record held by Nick Redden by almost 12 feett. His best throw of 167′ 11” beat the entire field by almost 30 feet!. Matt has been improving every meet since the beginning of the season. The work he puts into throwing is far and beyond anything I have seen from any thrower since I started coaching Track and Field.
“Bront Strickland had a great night in the sprints, winning the 400m and 200m.  The 200 was one of the closest victories I have seen in the sprints. It was due to Bront not giving up and running through the finish line.  He had the best meet of his Track and Field career and we are looking for him to improve heading into the District Championships. Hopefully he can punch his ticket to the state meet.
“Kyle Biancuzzo didn’t come away with an individual championship last night but he gets the coaches award for guts by running three and a half miles on the night and doing everything he could to help his team win. I couldn’t have asked for anything more from Kyle. He ran three of the hardest races on the track and gave everything he had. Kyle sacrificed an individual championship in the 3200 to help his team compete for a team title. In my book that makes Kyle a champion!
“For the girls, Denise Stephens led the way in the throws. She had two great performances highlighted by a personal record in the discus, with a throw of 107′ 11”.  Denise stepped up the challenge last night and performed.
“Rachel Glenny picked up a Mountain League Championship in the 300 hurdles beating the field by almost two full seconds. She took control of the race over the first hurdle and didn’t look back. Her confidence in this race is one of her strong points and over the next couple of meets we are looking for her times to start dropping as the level of competition starts to rise.
“We also had some great performances in the relays. With both of our 4×400 relays coming away with their fastest times of the year. The boys team of Strickland, Seth Caldwell, Cody Shaw and Colton Probst ran their season best by over two seconds and came away with a third place finish in a very tough field. Not to be outdone, the girl’s 4×400 of Glenny, Macy Forrest, Katrina Spencer, and Madison Jones also had a season best by over four seconds to finish second to a very strong Penns Valley team.
“I would like to give a special thanks to all of  the parents, coaches, and volunteer workers that helped out with the meet last night. With over 300 athletes competing in 18 events, I received many compliments about our facilities, the event and how well the meet was run.”
The Bison will be back in action when they travel to St. Marys on Tuesday May 3.
