NEW WILMINGTON — Junior Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) placed high in two events, setting a career record in one, to help Clarion win the 26-team Westminster Invitational Saturday.
She took second in the long jump with a leap of 5.32 meters (17 feet, five inches) and fifth in the 100-meter dash by winning her heat in a personal-best 12.65 seconds.
Those events attracted 49 and 55 entries, respectively.
Shomo’s efforts produced 12 of the Golden Eagles’ 97 points. Slippery Rock was a close second with 93.5 points.

BETHLEHEM — Freshman Sarah Lash (Clearfield) placed 16th among 45 javelin throwers at last weekend’s Moravian’s Greyhound Invitational with a heave of 34.29 meters (112 feet, 6 inches).

BASEBALL
DUBOIS — Freshman catcher/third baseman Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) finally got into the groove at the plate with six hits to drive in seven runs as Penn State DuBois swept a trio of Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference doubleheader last week, extending its winning streak to nine games.
His two-run double gave the Lions a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning of their 5-1 win at Penn State Wilkes-Barre Wednesday. The Lions won the second game 6-1.
The Lions trimmed Penn State York 13-5 and 12-0 in another road outing Saturday.
They returned to Showers Field Sunday and defeated Penn State Worthington Scranton 8-4 and 14-2 with Sorbera banging out two hits in each game. He had three RBIs in the nightcap.
A first-year team, Penn State DuBois (15-10) is tied for second place in the PSUAC with Penn State Mont Alto at 11-3 behind Penn State Brandywine (11-1).

PRINCES ANNE, Va. — Freshman pitcher/outfielder Thomas Summers (Clearfield) socked a go-ahead home run, his second of the season, in Maryland-Eastern Shore’s lone win in five games last week.
His fifth-inning clout put the Hawks in front of Coppin State 2-1 on their way to a 7-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory at Joe Cannon Field in Baltimore. He also faced two batters, walking one, in his ninth appearance on the mound.
Summers had a two-run double and a single in the 17-6 nightcap defeat.
He wore the collar in the three-game road series against MEAC North Division leader Norfolk (Va.) State Saturday and Sunday.
In 23 games with 19 starts, Summers is hitting .234 (15-for-64) with the two homers, four doubles and seven RBIs.
He has pitched 12 innings with a 1-2 record and 5.25 earned run average. The left-hander has struck out six, walked 11 and hit two batters while allowing 17 hits and nine runs, seven earned.

ANNVILLE — Sophomore infielder Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) drove in three runs with a pair of doubles in Penn State Altoona’s 8-7 non-league victory over Lebanon Valley last Wednesday.
He tied the game with a two-run double and then scored the winning run on an error in the Lions’ six-run eighth inning.
Fulmer was hitless in five at-bats Saturday when the Lions split an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference twinbill against Penn State Behrend at Showers Field in DuBois, winning 7-2 before losing 13-1.
In 23 games with 18 starts, Fulmer is hitting .195 (10-for-54) with three doubles and six RBIs.
Penn State Altoona is 2-6 in the AMCC and 19-21 overall.

MANSFIELD — Redshirt freshman outfielder Curtis Collins (Clearfield) picked up his first RBI for Mansfield when he reached base on an error in a 13-3 win that gave the Mounties a sweep over Penn Tech in non-league action Thursday.
The Mounties lost three of four weekend games to West Chester to fall to 6-14 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and 18-20 for the season.
Collins is 1-for-7 in 12 appearances.

SOFTBALL
PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Sophomore pitcher/first baseman Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) singled and doubled, drove in a run and scored a run as Clarion snapped a 14-game losing streak with a nine-inning 12-9 win over host Lake Erie College Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles split with the Storm after losing Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheaders to Bloomsburg 9-1 and 5-0 Wednesday, Indiana University of Pennsylvania 7-0 and 9-1 Friday and Pitt-Johnstown 3-2 and 5-3 Saturday.
Hoffman (2-11) was the starter and loser in the nightcaps against Bloomsburg and IUP, pitching 9.1 innings with four strikeouts, two walks and one hit batsmen. She surrendered 16 hits and 14 runs, 11 earned.
Her season totals for 17 appearances with 14 starts are 76.2 innings pitched, 95 hits, 84 runs, 65 earned runs for a 5.93 ERA, 48 strikeouts, 35 walks and seven hit batsmen.
Her .235 (19-for-81) batting average in 32 games is fourth on the team, and she leads the Golden Eagles (4-29, 1-15 PSAC-Central Division) in doubles with eight. She has six RBIs.
Redshirt freshman pitcher/outfielder Tierra Shope (Curwensville) played in five games last week and scored a run as a pinch-runner in the second loss to UPJ.
She has appeared in 19 games, including four starts, with one RBI and three runs scored.

MEN’S GOLF
GREENVILLE — Sophomore Jason Thorp (Curwensville) carded a 79 at The Greens at Greenville Saturday to help Thiel place a close second to Grove City in the Thiel Spring Invitational.
Medalist Jeff Jenkins posted a one-over-par 73 to pace the Tomcats, whose 309 total was just two strokes behind the tourney champions.
Thorp tied for eighth place in the 39-player field representing eight schools.
