BROOKVILLE — For five innings, the Clearfield Area High School baseball team was totally frustrated by Brookville pitcher Ben Reitz at McKinney Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Raider junior was working on a perfect game, primarily because he had the Bison beating the ball into the ground for 10 of the 15 outs.
Then, the Bison erupted.
Two walks and six hits later, they had for all of the runs of their 7-2 non-league victory that rewarded Josh Sorbera for pitching a five-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Pinch-hitter Zane Morgan and Jon Trimpey drew free passes, and Sorbera sacrificed the tying runs into scoring position.
Justin Fedder broke up the no-no with the first of his two singles, and Thayne Morgan, Brandon Orsich, Marcus Luzier, Ty Bender and Logan Lykens followed with run-scoring hits before Jordan Tosh replaced Reitz on the mound. Luzier’s double drove in two runs.
Brookville (3-5) had taken a 2-0 lead in the fifth when Sorbera sandwiched two of his three walks around a hit batsman to force in a run after Reitz had doubled home Logan Thrush.
Given the big cushion, the Bison sophomore set down the Raiders in order the last two innings for his second win in four decisions.
He had stranded five runners in the first four frames, two in the third when Tommy Hazel made an outstanding over-the-shoulder catch on Kyle Dunkle’s drive to deep center.
Clearfield (5-3) will make the long trip to Martinsburg Thursday for a Mountain League game against Central.
