HYDE — Raeleigh Redden and Abby Fedder combined on a two-hitter while the first three batters in the lineup produced seven hits and scored six runs as the Clearfield Area High School softball team blitzed Tyrone 10-0 at the Bison Sports Complex Monday afternoon.
The Mercy Rule victory in the Mountain League makeup leveled the Lady Bison’s record at 3-3 and gave them a three-game winning streak for the first time since the 2012 season.
Early inning runs have been scarce for the Lady Bison, but that all changed with a five-run salvo in the first frame.
After Brooke Cline and Sierra Jones singled, Aspen Bishop clubbed a double to left field for two RBIs. One batter later, Redden and Karlie Lewis came through with run-scoring hits.
“We’ve been stressing about getting out to a good start, and then we did a good job of adding on,” Lady Bison head coach Bob Lewis said.
The trio at the top produced again in the second inning, Jones and Bishop cracking RBI doubles after Cline led off with a single.
With a comfortable 7-0 lead and three more games on the slate in the next four days, Clearfield coach Bob Lewis lifted workhorse starter Redden, who gave up one hit and one walk.
Fedder, a sophomore, relieved and picked up her first win with three scoreless innings.
“We do have a busy week, so the innings are precious,” Lewis said. “It certainly was nice to get Abby in there to get some quality work, and she really a great job,” Lewis said. “She didn’t walk anybody and struck out three. She located, kept the ball down and induced a lot of ground balls.”
Three Lady Eagle errors gave the Lady Bison two runs in the third inning, and they closed it out in the bottom of the fifth on a hit batsman, a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error on Cline’s single off relief pitcher Anna Baron’s glove.
Cline was 3-for-3 with a walk and scored three times, Jones had two hits, an RBI and scored twice and Bishop drove in three runs with her two doubles and scored once.
“The top of the order did a fantastic job,” Lewis said. “Aspen continued to stay hot.
“We played really, really well on defense, too.
“I couldn’t ask much more out of the kids. We needed a game like that, not so stress-induced at the end.”
Clearfield is 2-3 in the league, while Tyrone is 0-6.
The Lady Bison go on the road to play unbeaten front-runner Philipsburg-Osceola Tuesday.
