PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Freshman pitcher/outfielder Thomas Summers (Clearfield) jumped his batting average 50 points to .245 with hits in Maryland-Easter Shore’s three games last week as the designated hitter for the Hawks.
He went 4-for-6 and scored three runs as the Hawks defeated Mount St. Marys 9-2 in a non-league game Wednesday but dropped a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference twinbill, 3-1 and 6-4, against Coppin State Sunday at Baltimore, Md.
Summers pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief in the first loss to Coppin State, lowering his earned run average to 5.40 from 6.30. He allowed two hits and one walk with one strikeout in his eighth appearance.
He’s worked 11.2 innings and surrendered 16 hits and nine runs, seven earned, while striking out six, walking 10 and hitting two.
At the plate, Summers is 12-for-49 with three doubles, one home run and four RBIs.
He’s played in 18 games for the 9-21 Hawks, who are 3-7 in the MEAC.

PITTSBURGH — Sophomore infielder Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) singled in his lone plate appearance in the opener and doubled in the nightcap for Penn State Altoona in 12-2 and 13-2 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference losses to host La Roche Wednesday.
In 19 games, including 14 starts, Fulmer is hitting .182 (8-for-44) with two RBIs and three runs scored. He is tied for second on the team with 10 walks.
The Lions are 1-5 in the AMCC and 7-20 overall.

KUTZTOWN — Redshirt freshman outfielder Curtis Collins (Clearfield) saw action as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement in both of Mansfield’s games against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division rival Kutztown Sunday.
The Mounties lost 12-0 and 4-1, falling to 13-16 with a 3-11 league log.
Collins has one hit and one RBI in five official at-bats in nine games.

DUBOIS — Freshman catcher/third baseman Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) made his third start at the hot corner in Penn State DuBois’ five-inning, 14-2 win over Penn State Hazleton at Showers Field Wednesday.
The Lions also won the nightcap, 4-0, to pad their Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference record to 5-3.
Sorbera, who also has started behind the plate three times, is hitting .111 (2-for-18) with one RBI in 11 games.

SOFTBALL
CLARION — Sophomore pitcher/first baseman Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) socked three hits, one a double, for Clarion at Memorial Stadium Wednesday when the Golden Eagles were swept, 10-1 and 13-4, by Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Central Division action.
She scored one run and drove in another in the second game, with the three-for-six day boosting her batting average 26 points to .250, fourth highest on the team.
Hoffman (2-10) also pitched her fifth complete game in the opener, giving up 13 hits and nine earned runs while striking out four and walking two.
She has made 11 starts in 13 appearance in the circle and owns two of the Golden Eagles’ three wins.
Her earned run average is 5.75 for 59.2 innings, and she has recorded 43 strikeouts and surrendered 70 hits and 28 walks.
Hoffman sports a team-high seven doubles and one of Clarion’s two triples among her 16 hits in 25 games. She has seven RBIs and two runs scored.
Redshirt freshman Tierra Shope (Curwensville) came off the bench for action at the corner infield positions as the Golden Eagles tumbled to 3-22 with their second nine-game losing streak of the season.
Shope is hitless in seven at-bats in 14 games, including three starts in the outfield.

FROSTBURG, Md. — Sophomore shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) singled in three of her six at-bats and had one stolen base for Shenandoah (Va.) in 5-2 and 10-2 non-league losses to Frostburg State Wednesday.
She hiked her batting average 23 points to .254 (18-for-71) and now is tied for the team lead in stolen bases with three, second in runs scored with 14 and tied for fourth in hits.
Vanderburgh did not play in 11-0 and 9-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference losses to No. 5-ranked Virginia Wesleyan Sunday that left the Hornets 2-8 in the conference and 8-18 overall.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
FAIRFAX, Va. — Freshman Sarah Lash (Clearfield) scored in the javelin throw for St. Francis at the Mason Spring Invitational in George Mason Stadium Saturday.
Her throw of 33.58 meters (110 feet, 2 inches) was good for eighth place among the 23 competitors from 10 of the 15 teams that braved frigid temperatures, rain, snow and winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour.
Junior Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) finished 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:29.39.
The Red Flash placed 10th with 23 points.
