American soccer star Abby Wambach, who recently retired, was arrested early Sunday on a driving under the influence charge in Portland, Oregon.
Wambach, 35, was arrested shortly after 2 a.m., according to the Multnomah County Jail in Portland. She was released on her own recognizance.
In Oregon, the offense is called driving under the influence of intoxicants, or DUII.
Wambach has been among the most-decorated players in women’s soccer.
In a career spanning 14 years, Wambach amassed two Olympic gold medals, one World Cup, a FIFA World Player of the Year award and six U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year crowns.
On Sunday, she apologized in a post on her Facebook page.
“Those that know me, know that I have always demanded excellence from myself. I have let myself and others down,” she wrote.
“I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated.”
