WILLIAMSPORT — In addition to becoming just the sixth member of the Lycoming Century Win Club at the National Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III Championships earlier this month, junior Nolan Barger (Clearfield) joined another exclusive group of Warrior wrestlers with the announcement he had earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American honors.
The standout 165-pounder is only the fourth Warrior wrestler to be honored for work in the classroom three times.
Prerequisites are having a Grade Point Average better than 3.20 and either qualifying for the NCAA Championships, placing in an NCAA Region Tournament or win more than 66 percent of his matches.
Barger met all of them as he claimed third place at the NCAA D-III nationals after finishing second in the Mideast Regional and wound up with a 36-2 record.
The two-time Division III All-American’s 4-0 run through the consolation bracket for the bronze medal after a 3-2 quarterfinal loss padded his career record to 101-22.
Last week, Barger was named to the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference All-Academic Team for the second time.
Qualifications are a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the last eligible grading period of the current academic year while completing the entire season for a conference school’s team.
Barger is majoring in Business Marketing/Finance.

SOFTBALL
WINCHESTER, Va. — Sophomore shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) had three hits in Shenandoah’s non-league 3-2 and 15-14 non-league losses to Catholic at Henkel-Harris Stadium last Wednesday.
She scored after stealing second base in the opener and scored three times after singling twice and drawing a walk in the nine-inning second game, when she also drove in a run.
Vanderburgh raised her average 28 points to .239 at 11-for-46 with three RBIs.
The Hornets will go into Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 6-8 record.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — St. Francis (Pa.) University freshman Sarah Lash (Clearfield) placed 13th among 42 javelin throwers with a heave of 35.49 meters (116 feet, 5¼ inches) at the season-opening Wake Forest Open Friday.
Red Flash junior Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) finished 60th in the 1,500-meter run B section with a time of 5:57.56.

BASEBALL
MANSFIELD — Sophomore Curtis Collins (Clearfield) pinch-ran in the first game and pinch-hit in the nightcap for Mansfield Saturday when the Mounties were swept by Millersville 8-2 and 13-2 in their home openers.
The Mounties (8-10) also dropped two road games to their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division rivals 6-2 and 3-1 Friday.
Collins has appeared in four games with two at-bats and one stolen base.
