Argentina has sunk a Chinese fishing vessel because of illegal fishing activity, according to a statement from Argentina’s coast guard.
The coast guard, known as the Argentine Naval Prefecture, sunk the Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 vessel after detecting it illegally fishing within the country’s exclusive economic zone, officials said.
The coast guard first fired warning shots and chased the Chinese vessel, then used force to damage it after the Chinese vessel conducted “dangerous maneuvers,” the coast guard said Tuesday.
The Chinese vessel sank, and five people on board — four crew members and the vessel’s captain — were rescued by Argentina’s coast guard. It was not immediately clear if the five rescued account for all those aboard the Chinese vessel.
CNN is seeking comment from China regarding the incident.
