Kathryn M. “Kathy” Hamm, 61, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016 at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer.
She was born April 12, 1954 in Philipsburg, the daughter of the late Francis M. and Goldie (Mosley) Hamm Gardner.
She graduated in 1972 from Moshannon Valley High School and in 1974 from DuBois Business College with an Associate’s degree in higher accounting and business administration.
She retired in 2006 from the Department of Labor & Industry as the manager of the UC Tax Office in Clearfield.
Prior to becoming manager, she was a UC Tax Agent and a secretary for the UC office.
After retirement, she served as bookkeeper for the Houtzdale Borough, Houtzdale Moose Lodge, Madera Moose Lodge, Brisbin Borough Sewer Authority and the First United Methodist Church of Houtzdale.
She served the church in many capacities including secretary, treasurer and volunteered at the church many hours each week. She was a member of the Administrative Board, choir, Women’s Group, Trustee and a volunteer cleaning person.
She enjoyed board games, crosswords, cards, reading, jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with children. She believed time spent with a child was time well spent.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a niece, Melinda Hamm.
She is survived by five siblings, Francis “Joe” Hamm and Lewis (Judy) Hamm, both of Madera, Marya Reinbott and Tim (Dorothy) Hamm, both of Houtzdale, and Barbara L. (Ron) Bainey of Osceola Mills and seven nieces and nephews, Greg (Ann) Hamm, Bill (Jamie) Hamm, Jessie (Tammy) Hamm, Amy Bainey Yarrison, Anna Hamm, Bridget Hamm, and Timmy Hamm.
She is also survived by a special aunt, Monabelle Nevling, with whom she spent time walking in their younger days, and by a special friend of 45 years (mystery man).
She will be remembered for her wit and ability to come off with short sayings to make everyone laugh. She always saw humor in most situations.
Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday at Kruise-Spewock Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., Madera.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the First United Methodist Church of Houtzdale with Pastor Robert Ford officiating. Private burial will be in Brisbin I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
