WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
EDINBORO — Junior Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) broke her own school record in the 60-meter dash and also won the long jump for Clarion in one of the top performances at the Edinboro Invitational in the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Dome Friday.
Shomo became the first Golden Eagle to crack the eight-second barrier with her 7.98 sprint that erased the 8.11 mark she set at the Youngstown (Ohio) State University Ice-Breaker Meet in early December.
She easily won the long jump with a leap of 5.27 meters (17 feet, 3½ inches), the second longest of her career.
Shomo also placed sixth in the 200-meter race with a career-best 27.08-second sprint.
Clarion breezed to the title in the five-team meet with 173.3 points. Edinboro was a distant second with 118.33 points.

WRESTLING
CLARION — Redshirt junior Jake Keller (Curwensville) came through with a big win against a familiar opponent as Clarion closed the dual meet season by upsetting No. 24-ranked Pitt 19-18 via criteria tie-breaker in Tippin Gym Sunday afternoon.
Keller, a member of the Pitt team for three seasons before transferring last fall, posted an 8-5 decision over former teammate Ronnie Garbinsky (Tyrone) at 157 pounds after grabbing a 6-0 lead with a reversal and four-point near fall late in the second period.
Keller was pinned in 1:35 by Dylan Cottrell Friday night when the Golden Eagles lost 30-6 to West Virginia in Morgantown.
Clarion wound up 7-12 with a 2-4 record in the Eastern Wrestling League. Pitt dropped to 10-7.
Keller finished 3-13 in duals and is 9-17 overall.

SOFTBALL
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Sophomore shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) hit safely and scored at least one run in three wins by Shenandoah (Va.) on its opening weekend trip to Salem College.
Batting leadoff, she singled and crossed the plate in both games as the Hornets swept Southern Virginia 11-2 and 11-0 in five innings Saturday.
After a 4-1 loss to Salem Sunday, Shenandoah bounced back to eke out a 5-4 win with Vanderburgh scoring the winning run in the sixth inning. She also scored the Hornets’ first run after reaching base on an error in the second inning.
Vanderburgh handled 19 chances flawlessly in the non-league doubleheaders.
Last year, she started every game for the 10-22 Hornets, hitting .237 and leading them in walks with nine. She collected 22 hits, including two doubles, and scored 11 runs.

BASEBALL
ALTOONA — Sophomore infielder Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) was the designated hitter in three games and junior pitcher Kurtis Krise (Clearfield) made one appearance for Penn State Altoona as the Lions opened the season with a pair of non-league doubleheaders in Virginia last week.
Fulmer singled and walked twice in an 11-5 loss but wore the collar in four at-bats in a 7-6 win against Eastern Mennonite Thursday at Harrisonburg.
The Lions suffered 18-1 and 12-2 setbacks to No. 29-ranked University of Mary Washington Saturday at Fredericksburg.
In the first game, Fulmer drew one walk while Krise worked 2-2/3 innings in long relief, allowing six hits and six earned runs.
Last season, Fulmer hit .234 with four doubles, four runs batted in and eight runs scored in 27 games at second base and third base. He made 21 starts.
Krise made only two appearances in 2015, working 4-1/3 innings with a loss in his lone decision.
As a freshman, he completed three of his six starts and posted a 3-2 record with a team-best 4.54 earned run average. He pitched 37-2/3 innings in eight outings.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
YORK — Edinboro sophomore Kara Thorp (Clearfield) lowered her season marks in three preliminary events at the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in the Graham Aquatic Center last weekend.
She finished 11th in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:17.47, bettering her previous record by almost 31 seconds, touched 28th in the 500 free in 5:25.63 and placed 33rd in the 200 free in 1:59.56.
Thorp also was 47th in the 100 free prelims in 57.70 seconds.
The Fighting Scots took seventh place in the 12-team meet with 226 points.

MEN’S SWIMMING
YORK — Edinboro freshman Alex Shugarts (Clearfield) set personal records in three preliminary events at the four-day 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships that concluded Sunday in the Graham Aquatic Center.
He placed 22nd in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.59, 25th in the 1,000 free in 10:30.15 and 32nd in the 100 free in 50.14 seconds.
Shugarts was 35th in the 50 free prelims in 23.01 seconds.
The Fighting Scots totaled 241 points for a fifth-place finish in the seven-team meet.
