CLEARFIELD – Several new events have been added to the Hoodie Hoo Day celebration, according to Main Street Manager Loretta Wagner of the Clearfield Revitalization Corp.
It will be held Saturday in the downtown, and the public is invited to join “a determined group of people” from the Clearfield area. It is an attempt to end winter by celebrating “Hoodie Hoo Day,” a little-known national holiday.
On this winter day one month prior to spring, Hoodie Hoo Day is celebrated in a number of ways in different locations. However, most involve groups of people gathering on or about Feb. 20 outside at noontime.
In Clearfield, the group will make noise and also shout “Wake Up, Hoodie Hoo!” Then, the group will go to various locations in downtown with the wooden image of Hoodie Hoo carved by John Crissman of Elliott’s Park.
Other events include “Shoot the Groundhog” by trying to knock the groundhog off his post atop of a slippery red canister; coloring for children; and finding the Hoodie Hoo. Token prizes will be awarded at the events, and any proceeds raised will be donated to a determined local family in need.
On Saturday the group will start at Spanky’s Courthouse Cafe at 10:30 a.m. and proceed at 11 a.m. to Express Café. It will then travel by Clearfield Pharmacy and Bob’s Army & Navy to arrive at the Clearfield County Courthouse at noon.
At noontime, group members will make noise, wave their hands over their heads and shout to chase away the winter blahs and bring in spring. The group will then proceed to some other merchants in downtown Clearfield.
Ethan’s Cafe and The Angry Bean will entertain Hoodie Hoo Day on Friday during lunch.
From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Sunday, a group will be at the Arrowhead Restaurant to celebrate Hoodie Hoo Day with Jane Lee Yare and Perry Centra, the owner of the Arrowhead Restaurant who has supported this event for the last eight years.
Centra stated that, “I will do anything for spring to come.”
