BROCKWAY – The Brockway Area High School wrestling squad improved to 12-5 on the season with a 31-17 victory over the visiting Curwensville Golden Tide Thursday night on the Rovers’ home mat.
Dean Swatsworth, Golden Tide head coach, talked about the meet and the match-ups, saying afterwards, “Going into tonight we knew that Brockway was a good team. We tried to match up our wrestlers to get the best matches we could. I thought we wrestled hard, and even though we lost I think as a team this was our best showing at a dual meet.”
The match started with the featured bout of the night as Shae Bloom, at 160 pounds for the Golden Tide, won by a major decision over Cody McClintick.
Bloom upped his sparkling record to 25-1 while McClintick fell to 23-7. Both wrestlers are seniors.
In the other highly anticipated bout it was freshman Blake Passarelli for Curwensville against Brockway’s Mitchell Overbeck at 113 pounds.
Overbeck, a senior, improved to 23-4 on the year with a 12-7 decision over the now 23-6 Passarelli.
The Tide did get wins at 152, 195 and 220 to go along with Bloom’s victory.
Curwensville’s Mason Lancaster pinned Brockway’s Bryce Grecco in just 36 seconds at 152 in the evening’s final bout.
Back to back wins for the Tide came at 195 when Hunter Lancaster won by a major decision, 12-3, over Brockway’s Pierce Yahner and then at 220 as Steven McClure knocked off Rover Mark Latuska, 8-2.
Swatsworth closed his comments with, “We came together and fought hard the whole match. I hope the kids can take this and carry it over to the post season now. We still have some little things we need to fix, but we are getting there. With two weeks before districts we are going to work hard to improve.”
Other Rover wrestlers who added to their impressive individual records were Ryan Carlson, a senior, 26-1 at 120 pounds and senior Dustin Jamison, wrestling at 126, now 25-8.
Brockway also won the junior high match, 54-12.
The Golden Tide end its dual meet season with an 8-12 mark and will now be off until the District 9 tournament which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, February 26 and 27, at Clearfield Area High School.
