Two New York Police Department officers were shot in the Bronx on Thursday night, the department said on Twitter.
One suspect, believed to be the shooter, is dead, two senior law enforcement officials told CNN.
The officers were patrolling a building when they encountered three men in hallway and asked them whether they lived in the building, the sources said.
At one point, it’s believed the officers left with one of the men, who they were trying to identify, when shots were fired.
Initially there were reports one officer had been shot in the head, but he actually was hit in the stomach, the sources said. He was in surgery Thursday night.
Neither officers’ wounds were life-threatening, the NYPD tweeted.
Police are questioning two other suspects.
