Sookie St. James, say it isn’t so!
Superstar comedian Melissa McCarthy says she wasn’t asked to return to the Netflix revival of “Gilmore Girls,” the show on which she played the super-talented chef sidekick to Lauren Graham’s character, Lorelai Gilmore.
McCarthy may be the best-known graduate of “Gilmore Girls,” which premiered in 2000 and aired for seven years.
The WB network show told the story of single mom Lorelai, who ran away from her rich and controlling parents after giving birth and created a life for herself in the town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. The show started with the renewed but strained relationship between Gilmore and her parents after teen daughter Rory wanted to go to an expensive private school.
McCarthy’s character often caught things on fire in her kitchen and cared for the two Gilmore Girls when they were down.
In her post-Stars Hollow career, the actor has gone onto great success.
She won an Emmy for her own now-canceled television show, “Mike and Molly,” was nominated for an Oscar for “Bridesmaids” and starred in several other blockbuster comedies. Her latest movie, “The Boss,” opens April 8 and co-stars Kristen Bell, Kathy Bates and Peter Dinklage.
On Tuesday, fan @TaraGibsonVA tweeted, “@melissamccarthy PUH-LEEZ come back to Stars Hollow!!”
“Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!” McCarthy replied.
Maybe they got their signals crossed?
“Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino wants McCarthy back for whatever time she can spare but says the actress has a jammed schedule that may make it hard to schedule.
“The thing I have said (to her team) is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene,’ ” Sherman-Palladino told TV Line.
“Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over (to the set) — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in, and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it.”
Graham, who later starred in the NBC hit “Parenthood” (2010-15), and her on-screen daughter, Alexis Bledel, both confirmed their return.
The show is being produced by Netflix in association with Warner Bros. Television, which is owned by CNN parent Time Warner. No premiere date has been announced, but filming just began on the four-part revival. Each episode takes place in a different season.
Which of Rory’s boyfriends will return? It may depend on budget and schedules.
Jared Padalecki, who played sweet high school beau Dean, stars in the CW hit “Supernatural.” Matt Czuchry, who played rich Yale boy Logan Huntzberger, is now a lawyer on “The Good Wife.” Milo Ventimiglia, who played bad boy Jess, may be best known for his starring role in “Heroes.”
One actor who will be missed is the late Edward Herrmann, who played patriarch Richard Gilmore. He died of cancer in 2014, and his death will be written into the show, said Sherman-Palladino.
The actor didn’t let anyone know he was sick, she said. “None of us really got to say goodbye to him. It was very hard, especially for Lauren (Graham) and Alexis (Bledel). He was like their other father.”
Netflix also confirmed that Scott Patterson (Luke), Sean Gunn (Kirk), Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) and Keiko Agena (Lane) will all be returning.
