BROCKWAY – Although the forthcoming “Snow of the Century” had yet hit outside or inside the Brockway Area High School gymnasium, it was still frigid. At least for the Curwensville boys basketball team.
Scoring just 27 points, only 10 in the second half , the Golden Tide were defeated by the Rovers 56-27.
Tide head coach Shane Pentz said after the game, “Our offense just couldn’t get untracked tonight. We just had too many possessions were we didn’t get a shot. Although we competed a little harder tonight, the offense didn’t come along.”
It was the second time this season that Brockway knocked off Curwensville. The Rovers won on the Tide home court in early December, 53-36.
Brockway and Curwensville started out in a close stretch, with the game being knotted at 2-2 and then 4-4 at the 6:43 mark of the opening eight minutes.
Two minutes later, Golden Tide senior R. J. Olson connected on two free throws that would get Curwensville as close as it would come the rest of the game, at 10-9 of Brockway.
Then the Rovers went on an 11-0 run to end the first quarter up 21-9.
Continuing the run into the second quarter, Brockway stretched the run to 23-4 with just under two minutes to play before halftime kicked in.
And at the half the Rovers led by 20 points, 37-17.
Curwensville scored just seven third quarter points and tallied just three in the final frame with three free throws and no field goals.
Olson paced the Tide with 12 points, while Quade Lundberg had 12 for Brockway along with 10 from teammate Jake Wineberg.
Pentz also said afterwards, “I thought we played a pretty good second half zone defense, when we were more competitive.”
The Curwensville junior varsity squad picked up a huge win in the first game, stopping the previously unbeaten Rovers 34-33.
The Golden Tide, now 1-14, travel to DuBois on Monday to play the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals. The junior varsity game tips off at 6 pm, with the varsity to immediately follow.
Earlier in January the Cardinals beat Curwensville on the Tide’s home floor, 62-48.
