CLEARFIELD – During Centralized Court today at the Clearfield County Jail, an ex-NFL player for the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles who has been accused of assaulting and threatening his girlfriend locally had his preliminary hearing continued for six months in order for him to complete anger management.
John Moffitt, 29, of Guilford, Conn., has been charged by the state police at Clearfield with terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment. The charges stem from an alleged domestic simple assault incident that occurred Dec. 30 near the Kwik Fill in Kylertown.
Moffitt will complete anger management in the state of Washington, return to court in six months to show proof of completion and likely enter a plea at that time. He is to have no contact with the victim who has Protection from Abuse orders against him. Moffitt’s bail has been set at $10,000 unsecured, said Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Dec. 30 the victim reported to state police that she and her boyfriend, Moffitt, were on their way to Seattle. She said that Moffitt started smoking a cigarette and she told him she thought he’d given up smoking.
The victim said she took Moffitt’s pack of cigarettes and threw it out the window while they were traveling. Both Moffitt and the victim told state police they engaged in a verbal altercation, which allegedly escalated to him hitting her in her facial area several times over the course of two hours.
Additionally, Moffitt allegedly dumped two bottles of water on her head, grabbed and twisted her wrist, spit on her three times and bit her finger. The victim was observed with a bump on the back of her head, a cut on her right hand, redness on her left arm, a small scratch on her right arm and bruising to her left eye, state police said.
During the altercation, Moffitt allegedly threatened to hit, abuse and “torture” the victim the whole way back to Seattle. He commented that he was allegedly “going to do something horrible to her in the future.” Moffitt also commented to the victim if he was going to jail, then he was going to “make it count.”
The victim told state police that she felt threatened by Moffitt’s comments to her.
According to previously published NFL reports, Moffitt, an offensive guard, most recently played for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was drafted in the third round and 75th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in 2011; he played college football at the University of Wisconsin.
Moffitt abruptly decided to walk away and retire from the NFL in November of 2013 while holding a roster spot with the Denver Broncos. In 2015, he announced his decision to come out of retirement after he had completed drug rehabilitation.
After being out of the league for 19 months, Moffitt returned to NFL football and signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles this past summer. He was released by the Eagles in September.
