Dutch Wrestlers Hand Bison First Loss of Season, 49-15

St. MARYS — After losing to the Dutch twice last season, the Bison wrestling team was hoping to turn the tables and keep their undefeated season intact as they headed to St. Marys Thursday night for a key District 9 dual meet.

Unfortunately, it was St. Marys that stayed undefeated, as they raised their record to 7-0 and dropped the Bison to 5-1.

The Bison only managed two wins and a forfeit on the night, as the host Dutch won all of the proverbial “toss-up” matches this time around.

During the regular season dual meet last year, the Dutch won by a similar score, 52-16; only to have the Bison close the gap to 33-22 at the District 9 Team Wrestling Championships. The Bison will most likely get another shot at the Dutch on February 6 at the 2016 team duals at DuBois Area High School.

The lone Bison winners were sophomore Luke McGonigal (14-1) with a regular decision at 170 and senior Travis Ogden (13-1) with a fall at 195. Junior heavyweight Hunter Bumbarger (8-5) was given a forfeit after the meet was well in hand.

Matt Ryan (11-5) lost a 4-2 toss up to Hyden Tettis (11-7) at 113. Tettis pinned Ryan in both duals last year.

At 120, Bison freshman Jude Pallo (10-6) lost by a point, 5-4, to senior Cameron Winters (4-4).

St. Marys’ Cameron Resch upped his record to 14-6 with a 3-1 win over Josiah McClarren (8-7).

182 pounder Christian Steffan and 220 pounder DJ Salinas of St. Marys each picked up their team-leading 16th win of the season with their wins.

The Bison will host the Bellefonte Red Raiders at the Weis Gymnasium on Tuesday January 19 in their next match.
