AMESVILLE — Quamone Newkirk netted a career-high 18 points and Jake Terry chipped in with 10, but the Curwensville Area High School boys basketball team paid for a cold first half as Moshannon Valley remained unbeaten in the Moshannon Valley League with a 62-46 win Wednesday night.
“We dug ourselves too deep a hole by scoring only nine points in the first half,” Golden Tide coach Shane Pentz said. “We were getting decent looks but we just weren’t making shots. And we fumbled the ball at times, too.”
The Golden Tide trailed 29-9 at intermission after registering only two points in the second quarter.
Their offense came too little, too late with Newkirk recording all of his points, including four three-pointers, in the final 16 minutes.
“Quamone really stepped up for us in the second half,” Pentz said. “Our defensive intensity picked up, and he got some steals when we were pressing for some breakaways to go with his three-pointers.”
The loss was the fourth in the MVL and the 10th overall for the winless Golden Tide.
The Black Knights rode a three-pronged attack to their fourth league win and a 9-3 record.
Connor Holobinko was high with 19 points, but Dillon Hauck and Curtis Neff were right behind with 18 and 16, respectively.
In the junior varsity game, the Golden Tide was victorious 35-25 with Avery Francisco scoring 10 points.
Curwensville faces two of its toughest tests yet on the weekend with a home game against reigning MVL champion West Branch (10-1) Friday and a road game against defending Allegheny Mountain League kingpin Elk County Catholic (11-0) Saturday in the makeup of Tuesday’s postponement.
