CURWENSVILLE – The Glendale Area High School girls basketball team picked up a Moshannon Valley League win Monday night traveling to Curwensville and knocking off the winless Lady Tide by a score of 55-47.
It was by far the best, most inspiring outing of the season for the Lady Tide, who lost at Glendale in the first game of the year 54-20.
Curwensville head coach Erik Duriancik, although not liking the loss, had some positive words for his team afterwards, saying, “We definitely played our best all-around game tonight. Just a real good positive effort for the girls. And thanks to that effort we played very hard.”
The Lady Tide had its only lead, 2-0, as Nikki Wormuth made a lay-up off of the opening tip five seconds into the game.
With each squad trading baskets in the first quarter it was Glendale taking the lead into the second eight minutes as Meghan Krepps hit one of two from the foul line to go up by one 15-14.
Glendale took control of the contest with an 18-7 second quarter edge to lead by a dozen at the half-time break, 33-21.
The biggest margin in the game was 14, which was at the 1:06 point of the second frame on another free throw by Krepps that stretched the Lady Viking lead.
Lauryn Clarkson fueled the Glendale offense in the second stanza as the junior tallied a total of 10 points.
Curwensville, for the first time all year, did not fold or bend, as it rallied to take the third quarter 18-8 to cut the Glendale edge to 41-39 after three quarters.
The Lady Tide opened the third quarter going on a 12-2 run to cut the Viking bulge to just two, 35-33, with 2:22 remaining before fourth quarter action.
The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, and when Wormuth scored a bucket with just 21 seconds left Curwensville was trailing by only two again, 41-39, going into the fourth and final quarter.
And what a quarter it was.
With Glendale holding on to a four point edge at 45-41, Lady Tide junior Hannah Dixon hit a three pointer pulling Curwensville to within just one, with 3:03 to play.
Glendale upped its lead to 47-44 before Tide substitute Madison Olson brought the Curwensville crowd to its feet.
Olson made a basket at 2:11 of the final quarter to cut the Glendale margin to just one, 47-46. Then, 24 seconds later, the sophomore pulled her squad even, hitting one of two from the charity stripe and with 1:47 left it was knotted at 47-47.
Unfortunately for Curwensville that would be the last points they would put on the Patton Hall scoreboard.
Glendale ended the game on an 8-0 run to pull out what was not a so easy victory for Lady Viking head coach John Matchock and his team.
Usually the third quarter has been a thorn in the Lady Tide’s game, but not tonight, as Duriancik said, “The third quarter has been downhill for us all year long so far. It was definitely a positive moment for us, scoring 18. And it was the fact that we were finding each other on the offensive end. Hannah (Dixon), Christine (Limbert) and Shauna (Guy) just know were each other will be on the court. That was really good to see.”
Three Lady Tide hit for double figures as Wormuth hit for 12, Guy 11 and Limbert 10.
Glendale, 7-3 on the season with the win, also had three girls in double figures. Lauryn Clarkson hit for 13, while Makenzie Lukehart, off of the bench, also had 13 and Meghan Krepps chipped in with 10.
Both teams spent a bunch of time at the free throw line, with Glendale hitting 16 of 32 and the Lady Tide just nine of 25 attempts.
The junior varsity game was won by Glendale also, as the Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Tide 41-4 in the evening’s first contest.
Curwensville, now 0-9, is home again Tuesday night for a battle with the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic with the JV game tipping off at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
