Nellie A. Witherite, 104, a resident of Ridgeview Elder Care, and formerly of
Grampian and Curwensville, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016 at Ridgeview.
Born Oct. 3, 1911 in Grampian, she was the daughter of Richard and Myrtle (Norris) Farwell.
She was employed by Merck Pharmaceuticals in New Jersey and then at the former Curwensville Hosiery Mill.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and home improvement projects. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, long-distance walking and community volunteering.
In 1939 she wed Cloyd Shannon Witherite, who preceded her in death in 1987.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Richard L. “Mubby” Witherite; her parents; five brothers, William, James, Robert, Donald and Lee; and two sisters, Helen Wall and her husband, Bartow and Dalney Spencer and her husband, Darrell. She was the last member of her generation.
Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Carol (Smith) Witherite of Curwensville and three grandchildren, Rickey Witherite and his wife, Kathy and Lori Bilger and her husband, Jeff, both of Curwensville and Rodney Witherite of Milton.
Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Bradley Witherite and his wife, Jodie, Kellie Jo Johnston and her husband, Max, Shannon Siple and her husband, Corey, Ryan Bilger and his wife, Lindsey and Coleman Witherite and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Witherite will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville, with Pastor Earle Farwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Friends Cemetery of Grampian.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
