More than 30 people were killed Monday in two separate — but similarly coordinated — bombing attacks at public places in Iraq, security officials told CNN.
In al-Miqdadiya, northeast of Baquba, 25 people died and 46 were wounded in an attack at a cafe, police officials said. Two suicide bombers detonated their explosive vests and a car bomb blew up, officials said.
In Baghdad, eight people, including a child, were killed and at least 20 people were injured Monday in an attack at a shopping mall, officials there told CNN.
A group of armed men stormed the Jawhara Mall after two among them detonated their suicide vests and a car bomb exploded, officials said. Some shoppers at the mall were taken hostage for a time. But security forces and a SWAT team arrived, sealed the area and fought with the armed men, killing all the attackers and freeing all hostages, officials said.
ISIS claimed responsibility for both bombings in statements posted on its media site.
