Assailants attempted to storm a hotel in the Egyptian coastal city of Hurghada, injuring a number of tourists, according to state-run news agency al-Ahram.
Egyptian security forces confronted two men wielding knives trying to escape the hotel, shooting both of them, according to a statement from the Egyptian Interior Ministry’s Facebook page.
Previous reporting indicated the men may have had guns, but the Interior Ministry said the pair had only a knife and a “sound gun,” which does not shoot bullets.
One of the armed men was killed and the other was wounded, the Interior Ministry said.
It’s not clear how many many people were injured in the attack.
Two Swedish tourists were stabbed and sent to the Nile Hospital in Hurghada, Khaled Megahed, a spokesman for Egypt’s Health Ministry, told al-Ahram.
But the Interior Ministry’s statement says three tourists — two Austrians and one Swede — were wounded.
The attack took place at the Bella Vista Hotel in the city’s busy downtown area, according to al-Ahram.
Hurghada is a resort town along Egypt’s Red Sea coast, located about 280 miles (451km) from Cairo.
