It’s a battle between candidates — about boots.
Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul mocked his rival Marco Rubio’s choice of footwear, in a tweet Wednesday, calling the boots he’s wearing “cute.”
Before his appearance on ABC’s “The View,” the Kentucky senator tweeted, “I was in Whoopi Goldberg’s dressing room picking out new show shoes. Eat your heart out @marcorubio!”
In the embedded video, he’s standing in front of racks of shoes, and while holding one, he said with a smile, “We’ve seen Rubio has those cute new boots and I don’t want to be outdone.”
Rubio unveiled what appeared to be black, leather boots with a thick heel during his trip to New Hampshire on January 3. He was in the state campaigning, but Twitter paid more attention to his shoe selection.
His campaign said his boots’ brand is Florshiem, where boots’ price range from $120 to $165 for a pair. The campaign added that Rubio measures in at 5’10”.
Earlier today, Jeb Bush alluded to Rubio’s boots without naming his name during a campaign stop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. A reporter said asked him about his shoes, and the former Florida governor responded, “They’re not high heeled” and smiled.
Carly Fiorina also tweeted about Rubio’s boots on Wednesday, posting a photo of her heeled boots standing over her campaign sign and writing to the senator, “Yeah, @marcorubio, but can you rock these?”
New York Times reporter Michael Barbaro tweeted, “Marco Rubio is rocking some seriously fashionable black boots today in New Hampshire.”
His followers replied with different observations about the boots, saying that Rubio was wearing heels to appear taller, or that they remind of them of the footwear donned by the esteemed English rock band, The Beatles.
