HYDE — After a two-week hiatus for the holidays, the Clearfield Bison wrestling team picked up right where they ended 2015 by staying undefeated in dual meet action. The Bison raised their record to 5-0 with a 53-20 victory over the visiting Penns Valley Rams.
With a traditional start at 106 lbs., sophomore Matt Ryan got the Bison rolling with a 13-1 major decision over Baylor Shunk to improve his record to 8-2.
Penns Valley held their only lead in the dual meet after 113 lbs. when Darren Yearick registered a first period fall over Cole Smay, giving the Rams a 6-4 lead. That changed for good at 120 when Jude Pallo received a forfeit win for the Bison.
Clearfield increased its lead to 24-6 by winning the next three bouts. Hunter Blake posted a 3-0 decision over Jeremiah Manning at 126, followed by Josiah McClarren’s 15-0 technical fall over Jason Ticknor at 132 pounds Logan Gilbert was on the receiving end of another Penns Valley forfeit at 138.
In the most entertaining bout of the night, the Bison’s Tallin Norris and Penns Valley’s Isaac Bierly used every inch of the squared circle in lighting up the scoreboard for 34 points. When the dust had settled, Bierly earned a 23-11 major decision.
Two more bonus point wins pulled the Rams to within three points of the Bison, 24-21, after 160 lbs.
At 152, Curtis Decker lived up to his name by decking Jacob Carter in the second period. Jared Hurd followed with a third period technical fall over Zane Morgan.
The Bison went on their own bonus point spree, finishing the dual meet with five straight falls. At 170 pounds, Hunter Wright, in his varsity debut, made quick work of Penns Valley’s Carl Mundt, pinning the Ram in 43 seconds.
Luke McGonigal stayed unbeaten on the season at 9-0 with a dominating 16-1 technical fall over Allen Cain at 182 pounds. Travis Ogden, now 8-1, came off of the bottom in the second period at 195 to turn and press Corey Rimmey for the fall in 3:40.
At 220 pounds, junior Hunter Bumbarger improved to 6-3 when he locked up a standing cradle and rocked Logan Johnson to his back at 1:48 of the first period. After the bout ended, the Penns Valley wrestler took exception to the outcome by shoving Bumbarger, resulting in an unsportsmanlike foul and the deduction of a team penalty point for the Rams.
Nate Lash (6-4) sent the happy Bison faithful on their way when he flattened Jared Bressler in 3:10 to set the final at 53-20.
The Bison hit the road this weekend, travelling to Meadville for the annual Tool City Tournament. Wrestling gets under way Friday and continues through Saturday night.
Penns Valley won the Junior High match 43-30.
