CLEARFIELD – Imagine being completely alone on Christmas morning with nothing under your Christmas tree.
This is the fate of many in the Clearfield area, so the Clearfield Borough Police Department is teaming up with the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging and several local businesses to spread some holiday cheer to elderly citizens.
At Thursday’s work session, Officer Nathan Curry spoke to members of the Clearfield Borough Council about “giving trees,” for senior citizens.
Curry said from Nov. 16-Dec. 11, trees will be placed at the Clearfield Pharmacy and Clearfield CVS. The trees will be decorated with cards, containing items that are needed by elderly citizens.
“They’ll be pretty simple,” Curry said. “It’ll have 65-year-old male, bedroom slippers, size 10 or something like that. Some cards will have more than one item, depending on the need.”
Curry said those wishing to contribute can take a card off the tree, purchase the items and drop them off at either the Clearfield Borough Police Station or at the Area Agency on Aging.
“It’s neighbors helping neighbors, community helping each other,” Curry said. “For some of these people, it may be the only thing they get this season.”
Curry said the police department and the Area Agency on Aging are also working with local fuel oil providers to take donations to be used to purchase heating oil.
“In the past 10 years with the police department, I’ve worked every shift, I’ve done nearly every job and I’ve been in some of these trailers and houses. Some of these people have to keep their houses at 30 degrees because it’s either heat their home or put food in their bellies,” Curry said.
He said those wishing to make donations for heating oil can contact the Area Agency on Aging.
Kick-off for the event will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 16 at the Clearfield Pharmacy.
