Hit-Girl is going under the sea.
Chloë Grace Moretz, perhaps best known as the pint-sized masked hero in the “Kick Ass” movies, will star in Universal’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid.”
The 18-year-old actress confirmed the news on Twitter Friday.
Moretz, who starred in the remake of “Carrie” and has appeared in Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” and on “30 Rock,” will play Ariel in the movie reboot, based on the 19th-century fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. No timetable was given for when the movie might hit theaters.
The announcement by Universal could undermine any plans Walt Disney Studios may have had to produce a live-action version of its 1989 hit, which earned more than $200 million worldwide.
Disney has recently been busy remaking its classic animated films into live action with “Maleficent,” “Cinderella,” and the upcoming “Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
In the meantime, “Mermaid” is still in search of a director. Sofia Coppola was briefly attached but dropped out of the project last spring.
Moretz next will appear in the YA adaptation “The 5th Wave,” set for release on January 15.
