DUBOIS – The DuBois Area Historical Society will continue a November tradition of hosting a military veteran on Nov. 4, at 7 p.m., when World War II U. S. Navy veteran Emory Miller will be the guest speaker. Miller’s program at the society’s museum, 30 W. Long Ave., DuBois, is free and open to all.
Miller, who lives in Home Camp, was 17 years old when he enlisted in the U. S. Navy on Dec. 30, 1942. After completing boot camp at Newport, R. I., Miller served his enlistment in the Pacific Theater.
He was assigned to the U.S.S. Whitehurst, a destroyer escort, which survived the impact of a Japanese suicide plane at Okinawa, Japan. That attack killed 42 members of the Whitehurst’s crew.
World War II ended while Miller was still on duty. He spent the remainder of his tour on shore duty in Shanghai, China. He completed his enlistment on Dec. 27, 1946.
This is the concluding 2015 program for the DuBois Area Historical Society. The museum and genealogic library will remain open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. through the end of November.
