Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a speech to the British Parliament on Tuesday afternoon as he and his wife begin a four-day visit that has aroused concern among human rights activists.
The visit appears designed to strengthen economic ties between Britain and China. The rhetoric in advance of the meeting has been warm, and Xi will be met with a ceremonial gun salute
He will also stay in Buckingham Palace, meet with members of the Royal Family, and, of course, British Prime Minister David Cameron.
Activists fear human rights left off agenda
Cameron, speaking on CCTV, China’s state broadcaster, said the visit would mark a “golden era” in the two countries’ relationship.
Human rights activists say they favor economic ties and talks between different countries. But they fear that concern about human rights in China is being pushed off the agenda entirely.
