An Indian court has sentenced five people to death for their involvement in a series of deadly bombings on Mumbai trains nine years ago.
Seven other people were sentenced to life in prison over their roles in the 2006 attacks, said KP Raghuvanshi, a former top anti-terrorism official who investigated the case.
The 12 defendants were convicted earlier this month after a nine-year trial over the coordinated terrorist attacks. The sentencing took place Wednesday.
Seven powerful explosions ripped through Mumbai’s commuter train transportation system in July 2006, killing more than 185 people during rush hour.
