BROCKWAY – The Brockway Center for Arts & Technology (BCAT) will participate in Smithsonian magazine’s 11th annual Museum Day Live!, on Sept. 26.
On this day, participating museums and galleries across the United States open their doors for free to emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, which offer free admission every day.
From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., BCAT will host an exhibition of its permanent collection featuring artists from across the United States and around the world who have presented shows at the center.
BCAT’s teaching artists will also offer live demonstrations in metal arts and ceramics. Area high school students are encouraged to attend, and BCAT will offer a student shuttle service from DuBois Area High School. A light lunch will be available for attendees.
BCAT Executive Director, Debbie Heigel, explains how BCAT received approval to participate in Museum Day Live! from the Smithsonian, which is the largest museum and research complex in the world.
“Like all museums and cultural institutions that participate in Museum Day Live!, we needed to demonstrate that we are a 501(c)(3) organization,” Heigel says. “We also submitted information about recent gallery events that we’ve hosted, along with photographs of some the work that we display.”
Participating in the Museum Day Live! program represents BCAT’s commitment to make learning and exposure to the arts accessible to residents in the area.
“This is the perfect reason to invite our local community to see how we aim to inspire young people in our area through the arts,” said Kristine Gasbarre, coordinator of youth arts & events at BCAT.
BCAT’s after-school programming and “Art After Dark” fall classes will begin on Sept. 28. In addition to their ceramics class offerings, in summer 2015 the center also opened a state-of-the-art metal arts studio.
