CLEARFIELD – Home-brewers are being sought out by the Clearfield County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
This year, the SPCA’s Ales for Tails Craft Beer Tasting event will include a “Top Dog Home-brewer Competition.”
Organizers from the SPCA have hosted Ales for Tails for four years. They have decided to take it a step further this year by incorporating a competition for amateur brewers.
The event will be judged by Brew Masters from Otto’s of State College and Race Street Brew Works of Clearfield. Awards will be given for each class, and a special “Top Dog” trophy will be awarded for “Best of Show.”
There is a $10 fee per entry, with a limit of one entry per category. Brews will be pre-judged prior to the event, and awards will be presented at the Ales for Tales event.
This year’s Ales for Tails event will be held from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Florian Banquet Center in Clearfield.

This year’s Ales for Tails event will include live music from guitarist Brandon Giuffre, dinner, vendors and craft beer sampling.
The Clearfield County SPCA, a 501(c)3 organization, operates solely on donations and fundraising. The annual calendar contest and Ales for Tails are the two largest fundraising initiatives this year.
With the continued cost of operating expenses, the fundraising events help the SPCA to provide a valuable service to the people of Clearfield and surrounding communities.
Event organizer and board member Carolyn Smeal hopes that bringing the first home-brewer competition to the area will make this a “fun annual event.”
“My husband is a brewer. Him and his friends are always comparing recipes and sampling each other’s brew,” said Smeal.
“I thought it would be a fun to give the home-brewers in the area an opportunity to see just how good their brew is and have it judged by local Master Brewers. One lucky home-brewer will win bragging rights for the year.”
