CURWENSVILLE – Senor quarterback Jake Terry threw four touchdown passes, Quamone Newkirk (4 catches for 115 yards) hauled in three scores while running backs Nick Stewart (16 carries for 165) and Hunter Johnson (19-138) each rushed for over 100 yards as the Curwensville Golden Tide romped to a 55-22 opening night victory over visiting Port Allegany at Riverside Stadium in Curwensville.
The start of the season opener was delayed due to lightning in the vicinity of the Golden Tide home field with the game kicking off approximately a half-hour late at 7:30 pm.
Sophomore Stewart scored the first touchdown for Curwensville on a seven yard scamper with 7:05 to go in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was no good, but Tide had the early lead at 6-0.
The Gators came right back and marched into the end zone on a 12 yard run by Dylan Baumgarner with 6:41 remaining in the opening frame. Port Allegany took its only lead, 8-6, as Baumgarner ran in the two point conversion.
As time ran out in the first quarter, Terry hit Newkirk on a 31 yard touchdown pass and then found Stewart in the end zone for the two point conversion giving Curwensville the edge, 14-8, heading into the second quarter.
It was all Tide in the second 12 minutes as they scored three times to take a commanding halftime margin of 35-8.
Stewart had a 32 yard TD run and a two point conversion run. Johnson got into the act with a four yard touchdown while Terry once again hit Newkirk, this time a 51 yard strike, and with Jared Bakaysa kicking the extra point Curwensville took a comfortable 27 point cushion into the locker room.
Each team scored two third quarter touchdowns.
The Tide got both scores on Terry touchdown passes. Twenty-three yards to Newkirk and a strike over the middle to Zach Marshall. Bakaysa added one of two PAT attempts.
Ben Junod closed out the scoring for the Golden Tide on the night on a fourth quarter one yard run with 9:59 remaining. Bakaysa’s PAT set the final at 55-22, Curwensville.
The Golden Tide makes its first road trip of the 2015 campaign next Friday, traveling to Otto-Eldred, with kick-off set for 7 pm.
