BELLEFONTE – The American Red Cross wants to help increase fire preparedness, as well as to reduce the number of fire fatalities and injuries.
ARC volunteers will canvas the neighborhood around St. Joseph’s Catholic Church this Saturday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. to install smoke detectors and educate residents on the importance of fire preparedness.
These free smoke detectors, made possible in part by Ben Franklin Technology Partners, are part of the Red Cross’ effort to reduce the number of fire injuries and fatalities by 25 percent over a five-year period.
“Right here in Centre County we, remember three Bellefonte structures that have been devastated by fires in the past – the DoDe, Garman Theater and Bush House,” noted Red Cross Mid State Executive Director Stephanie Fost.
“Today, the Red Cross wants to try to change that story with our Home Fire Preparedness Campaign. Walking door-to-door with our friends and neighbors, we’re probably smiling because of the time spent together, but we also know that we might save another historic structure or, more importantly, a life. That is the best way the Red Cross can make a difference in our communities.”
All ARC disaster assistance is provided free of charge and is made possible by the voluntary donations of time and money from caring individuals and, in part, by contributions given through the United Way.
