All three terrorists involved in a Monday attack on a police station in the Indian state of Punjab are dead, and the siege has ended, according to a top Punjab police official.
Six victims were killed — three civilians and three security forces, said Dinkar Gupta.
Earlier, the gunmen fired at a nearby bus stand before storming the police station, which is next to a hospital, said Gupreet Tur, police chief of Gurdaspur district.
Tur described the raid as a terror attack but said it was not immediately clear to which group the attackers belonged.
Sandwiched between two rivers, Gurdaspur is Punjab’s northernmost district and is close to Pakistan.
Pakistan’s government condemned the attack.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist incident in Gurdaspur, India, today, in which a number of precious lives have been lost,” a Pakistan statement said. “There are reports of others having suffered injuries. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families.”
